As our workplace becomes increasingly diverse, we are learning the complicated nuances of communication.  Unfortunately, many of us learn about these nuances only after we’ve done or said something that offends another.  As a result, we spend an inordinate amount of time removing our foot from our mouth and soothing hurt feelings. 

This class is not about becoming a bland diplomat who knows how to say “nothing” in fourteen languages (although that is a skill not to be underestimated!).  Instead, it focuses on knowing where the land mines are and how to avoid them.

Program Outline:

1. The significance of the messenger:  how messengers can diminish or enhance the message

2. The significance of the message:  How being too clever can mangle messages and why effectiveness can be destroyed by the need to explain and by inappropriate humor

3. The importance of context:  How unspoken messages, timing, symbols, stereotypes, delivery, and forum can be far more memorable than what is said

4. The nature of the audience:  How knowledge of the audience alerts you to issues of negativity and respect.  What are the hot buttons for various racial, ethnic, and religious groups?
